Rouvas Gorge Hiking Safari

Are you into hiking? Then let our jeeps take you up the mountain road, through the village of Gergeri where your hike down the scenic Rouvas Gorge, the most famous gorge in the Heraklio region, begins with our experienced hiking guide. After dropping you off at the top of the plateau, where we have our first stop to explore the peaceful Forest of Rouvas, we start to descend the 5km gorge to experience the unique ecosystem with rich flora and fauna, interesting geological formations and cliffs of rare Cretan beauty.

Walk over wooden bridges down steep, stone stairways and rocks. Spot some of the many birds such as Griffin vultures and hawks. Pass by streams of the 'best water in the world' till we reach the beautiful artificial Lake of Zaros.

Have a rest and enjoy a well-earned lunch at the tavern by the lake to taste fresh trout farmed in the waters that come down from the gorge. (Vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes also available.) Take a scenic stroll around the lake and see turtles, fish, geese and ducks.

After lunch, our jeeps will be waiting for you to continue our jeep Safari up the mountain to the church of Agios Efthimios which is a spectacular cave church built in the side of the mountain. From there you get a panoramic view of the gorge and take some amazing photos.

We then continue our way through the village of Zaros to the Faneromeni artificial lake and dam, which covers an area of approximately 1000 acres and has a capacity of 20 million square meters of water gathered from Mount Psiloritis. Finish off your day by visiting the donkeys at the Agia Marina Donkey Rescue. AMDR has been rescuing abandoned and abused donkeys for over 15 years. Brush, pat or just look at the donkeys who love the company and are very friendly before returning to your hotel.

Good walking footwear is essential, as is a sunhat. Bring water.
